Being constantly aware of where you are financially no matter how busy was a great lesson. Learning to mind the money without fear but with gratitude and good stewardship over what has been entrusted to me was key to my growth and prosperity.
I don’t have to tell most leaders, business or nonprofit or government, these days, that keeping a handle on spending and revenue is critical to sustainability. Before QB online, I kept an intricate spreadsheet. I actually still keep a smaller spreadsheet for cash flow decisions and to track both the business and my personal expenditures and revenue. I am tracking where I am on projected sales goals, where I am on monthly contracted revenue and revenue received. I am looking at spending. When I look at my plan, I am projecting those expenditures based on when I want to launch certain projects. This spreadsheet lets me know when a month will be skinny and what months we will be living “high on the hog” to quote my grandmother.
As I shared with a client recently, this information is key to you staging and scheduling special expenses for growth be that a marketing campaign or facilities expansion. When you look at your revenue & expenses in this way, seeing your current reality for the whole year, then you can plan and stage those new projects without economic hardship. Then you know when to step up your sales game. You can see the slow periods head of time and you can plan for them. None of your financial ups and downs should catch you by surprise. And looking at the whole year helps you build for the future. Research shows that those who are most prosperous and most successful financially mind their money long term. Training yourself and your team to look long term and play the long game will insure your success and sustainability over time.
